WE WERE NEVER LOVERS

I thought we were,
when our eyes held
each other for so long.

When your fingers stroked
my hand in crevices
I never knew I had.

When I found your tongue
behind my teeth,
touching my heart.

When I kissed veins
the length of your neck,
the length of my soul.

Under the covers,
we found so many ways
to hold each other,
to taste each other.

I was inside you
when you stopped,
when you said,
you weren’t sure.

Now you say, we
were never lovers.

NON SIAMO MAI STATI AMANTI

Pensavo che lo fossimo,
quando i nostri occhi si sostenevano
a vicenda per lungo tempo.

Quando le tue dita accarezzavano
la mia mano in fessure
che non sapevo di avere.

Quando trovavo la tua lingua
dietro i miei denti
a toccarmi il cuore.

Quando baciavo le vene
lunghe quanto il tuo collo,
lunghe quanto la mia anima.

Sotto le coperte,
abbiamo trovato tanti modi
di possederci,
di assaporarci.

Ero dentro di te
quando hai detto basta,
quando hai detto
che non eri sicura.

Ora dici,
non siamo mai stati amanti.

WINDOW ON MY PAST

I write so that my thoughts,
fears, mistakes and emotions
will be read and forgiven.

I think I’m putting my life in amber,
although it may end up
being buried in silt,
turned into a fossil
rather than a treasure.

Either way, I will die
trapped in something.

FINESTRA SUL MIO PASSATO

Scrivo affinché i miei pensieri,
le paure, gli errori e le emozioni
siano letti e perdonati.

trasformata in fossile
invece che in tesoro.

Ad ogni modo, morirò
intrappolato in una qualche cosa.

ONE WOMAN KNEW

one woman knew
the uprising was coming

one woman knew
she’d never have freedom again

one woman knew
she’d never be able to shop again

one woman knew
her children would never go to school again

one woman knew
her husband would never have a job again

one woman knew
the mobs were coming

one woman knew
the Albanians only wanted a pure race

one woman knew
so she drank a bottle of lice shampoo

and now the village
no longer has

a Gypsy fortune-teller

IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE

No matter how much you got,
it can happen to you,
to anyone.

A few bad investments,
a woman who’s gotten you
to put everything in her name,

kids who had to have the best,
friends and family who promised
to pay you back but never did.

No matter how much you got,
it can happen to you,
to anyone.

I was never a quitter
but when everyone else
quits on you, well that’s it.

So one day, I just walked away
from it all. Just jumped
on a bus and rode into the sunset.

You ride the buses
until the bank
stops your credit card.

Then you hitchhike
until your clothes are so bad
no one will pick you up.

Then you ride the rails
until it’s too cold
to sleep rough.

Then you seek out
a shelter or mission,
convincing yourself

you’re free at last.

PUO’ SUCCEDERE A CHIUNQUE

Non importa quanto hai,
può succedere a te,
a chiunque.

a chiunque.

Vai in autobus
finché la banca
non ti blocca la carta di credito.

Poi fai l’autostop

Poi viaggi in treno
finché non fa troppo freddo
per dormire all’aperto.

Poi cerchi
un rifugio o una missione,
e ti convinci

di essere libero finalmente.

A SPECIAL SCHOOL

I’ve always known my daughter was bright.
Drawing pictures with many details,
memorizing all the songs of our ancestors,
playing the piano before she was five.

So I was surprised when the teacher came
To our home and told us
our daughter wasn’t ready for school.

Her Czech wasn’t good enough,
she needed help with her grammar.

My wife said that all six-year-olds
need help with their grammar.

The principal agreed to see us.
He said our daughter was a nice girl,
but she would be the only Gypsy in her class.

We finally agreed.
We signed the paper.
We didn’t want our little girl picked on.

But now when I walk her to school,
and I see the plaque on her building,
my heart breaks.

Why didn’t they tell us
her special school
was a center for

the mentally retarded.

A casa nostra e ci disse

ritardati mentali.

THE UNDEFEATED

only exist in comic books.
Even Marciano didn’t go undefeated.

Rocky lost outside the ring
‘cause he avoided Kid Riviera.

In real life you can’t avoid opponents,
especially the worst kind: family and friends.

Life isn’t a three-round amateur bout,
but a death camp where you do bad things to survive.

A bare knuckle fight in a pig stye
with no bell or referee to save you.

I’ve got more scar tissue on my soul
than around my eyebrows.

Broken bones mean nothing
compared to a broken heart, broken dreams.
Women, your own kids,
enjoy making you suffer

more than a boxer
hitting below the belt.

You may win in the ring,
but you’ll never win

more than a couple of rounds
in life.

L’IMBATTUTO

esiste solo nei fumetti.
Anche Marciano non è stato imbattuto.

Rocky ha perso fuori dal ring
perché ha evitato Kid Rivera.

Nella vita reale non puoi evitare nessuno,
specialmente i peggiori: famiglia e amici.
